This bevy of steam power belonged not to the Atlantic Coast Line, but to United States Sugar! Operating an internal railroad system proved far more cost efficient. (Railroad Museum of South Florida Collection courtesy of U.S. Sugar.)

The steam engines seen in the previous photograph were replaced by diesel electric locomotives, like the one seen here in front of the Clewiston mill house. They were far less costly to operate and maintain. And, they required just an engineer—no fireman.

After harvesting, the cut cane is loaded into cars—owned by U.S. Sugar—and transported to the mill house. (Florida State Archives.)
